TRI-COPC (Tri-County Pollution Control) is a non-profit organization in Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, which includes Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac Counties. Our organization is involved with many serious environmental issues:
1) Pollution of the St Mary's River: The reports of human sewage spotted on the north shore of Sugar Island has caused local citizens to become justifiably angry and alarmed. Public forums have focused on the problem, but no meaningful action has been taken. On a happier note, thanks to the hard work and ongoing efforts of BPAC (Binational Public Advisory Council), the planned cleanup of Cannelton and Ashmun Bay (both Superfund sites) is now in the works. TRI-COPC continues to support BPAC by attending its meetings, gathering petition signatures, stirring greater public involvement, contacting our government officials, etc. The St Mary’s River cleanup is among our top concerns.
2) The importation of out-of-state trash into Michigan: While there has been some legislative progress, it frankly has not been enough. We continue to lobby our legislators and work to increase public involvement. We support proposals that call for an increase in state dumping fees to discourage outsiders from bringing their garbage into our beautiful state.
3) The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) continues statewide to allow landfill expansion into surrounding wetlands. In 2004 the DEQ allowed Dafter landfill to expand into wetlands. It has also recently allowed a landfill in Wayne County to expand into 31 acres of wetlands. We are generally opposed to these expansions.
We need your support, so please consider a contribution. Better yet, become a TRI-COPC member. The cost of basic annual membership is only $10 and covers the calendar year. Print and fill out the SUPPORT/MEMBERSHIP FORM and return it to us with your check or money order. If you do not have a printer available, simply include a handwritten note with your contribution/dues. As a member, you will receive notices of our meetings. We welcome your involvement.
Thank you for helping TRI-COPC!
