Dear Concerned Residents:
Tri-County Pollution Control (TRI-COPC) celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004. Our organization began in June, 1979, when concerned citizens banded together to fight the formation of the Dafter landfill. We were shocked and angered that the DNR had approved locating the landfill on top of our aquifer and into wetlands, but despite our outcry, the landfill was built. As if that weren’t enough, in 2004 the DEQ agreed to allow the landfill’s expansion into even more wetlands!
Today we are working with state and national legislators to stop the importation of out-of-state and foreign trash. We were gratified to see recent state legislation that requires out-of-state trash to comply with the same standards as trash from within Michigan. But more needs to be done. Currently we are actively fighting these latest assaults on our local environment:
- Further expansion of the landfill
- The EPA’s newest effort to allow inadequately treated human sewage waste into the Great Lakes
- The proposed dumping of mercury, cadmium, arsenic, chromium and lead into the Dafter landfill (in violation of Type 2 landfill standards) as part of the Cannelton site cleanup project.
TRI-COPC grew through the years as a result of incredibly determined and courageous folks who cared deeply about what they saw happening to their local environment. Many of these wonderful people are now deceased. Even though new members have joined TRI-COPC, we need greater involvement and more support for the challenges that lie ahead. We ask for your help.
Please consider attending our next meeting on Saturday, January 22, 2005 2:00 p.m. at the Dafter Township Hall, W. Ten Mile Rd, in Dafter. Add your thoughts and ideas to our discussion of the environmental issues facing us. We also ask for your financial support by becoming a TRI-COPC member for only $10/year. At stake are the purity and beauty of our regional air and water resources. Join in our cause and help us to fight the good fight. Please RSVP me at (906) 632-2967.
I hope to see you at our next meeting!
Sincerely,
Annie Goetz, President
TRI-COPC, Inc.
